BEFORE & AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ELECTROLYSIS

Before Electrolysis

1. Hair Length: Ensure the hair to be treated is long enough—ideally with 3-4 days’ growth.
2. Remove Makeup: Remove any makeup from the treatment areas. Treatment can only be performed on clean, healthy skin.
3. Diet & Sensitivity: Diet affects sensitivity. Avoid stimulants like caffeine, chocolate, or sugar on treatment day. Eating a meal before treatment can help reduce discomfort.
4. Hydration: Hydration is crucial. Avoid alcohol the night before your appointment, and drink plenty of water the day before, the day of, and the day after treatment. Hydrated follicles are easier to treat and usually result in less pain. Hydrated skin also heals faster after treatment than dry skin.
5. Sun Exposure: Avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before treatment. Activated melanin can cause hyperpigmentation.
6. Avoid Retinoids: Discontinue any strong retinoids (e.g., Retin-A, Tazorac) at least 1 week before treatment. Stop Accutane for at least 6 months before electrolysis.
7. Manage Stress & Sensitivity: Minimize stress on the day of your appointment. Some clients are more sensitive right before or during their menstrual cycle. Consider any factors that could heighten sensitivity and plan accordingly, including any necessary pain management.
8. Comfort During Treatment: Get as comfortable as possible during your session.
9. Pain Management Options: Senza Pelo offers two primary methods of pain management:
BioScience: A non-prescription topical numbing cream available for purchase. Apply it 30 minutes before treatment and allow it to absorb fully.
Lidocaine Injections: These subdermal injections are administered by a registered nurse for an additional fee. They must be scheduled in advance to verify availability. Lidocaine injections and topical numbing cream should not be used together on the same day.

Electrolysis Aftercare

Following treatment, avoid touching or scratching the treated area. Failure to do so can introduce bacteria and cause a breakout (whiteheads).
1. Avoid Makeup or Perfume: Do not wear makeup or perfume over the treated area for 24 hours. Alcohol-based products will dry out the skin, and makeup can introduce bacteria. Use only gentle cleansers or witch hazel to avoid irritation.
2. No Swimming: Avoid swimming in a chlorinated pool for the first 48 hours after treatment, as chlorine can further irritate the skin.
3. Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid extended sun exposure for 72 hours after treatment. The skin defends against UV rays by producing pigment, but if the skin is irritated, it can overproduce pigment in those areas, leading to hyperpigmentation or brown spots.
4. Moisturize for Healing: Apply Avene Thermal Cicalfate Balm or aloe vera to the treated area the night after treatment to support faster healing. Keeping the area moisturized will prevent scabs and promote healing. Use only clean hands or Q-tips.
5. Treat Ongoing Irritation: If irritation persists on the second day, apply 1% hydrocortisone cream or hydrocortisone acetate to reduce redness and swelling. This can also help with any pimples.
6. Allow Scabs to Heal Naturally: If small scabs appear, do not scratch them away. Scratching can lead to scarring or infection. Let them fall off naturally. If there’s discomfort in closely treated areas, a small amount of Avene Thermal Cicalfate Balm can help with healing.
7. Avoid Tweezing: Tweezing is counterproductive to electrolysis and can cause hair to regrow thicker. If scheduling conflicts with treatment, clip or shave the hair without affecting results.
8. Expect Some Regrowth: Some regrowth is normal. Scheduling the next treatment after the first regrowth makes treatment more effective since the hair roots are shorter and weaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

In 1885, Dr. Charles E. Michel, an ophthalmologist in St. Louis, Missouri, developed a technique to remove inverted eyelashes. He used an electric current generated by a battery cell to make permanent hair removal possible. Dr. William Hardaway, a dermatologist and colleague of Dr. Michel, began using the technique on facial hair problems of women. That was the beginning of electrolysis, the only proven and medically recognized method of permanent hair removal.

Waxing, tweezing, shaving, and depilatories may work for a short time, but all are temporary solutions for hair removal.

Electrolysis involves inserting a sterile, fine filament into the natural hair follicle of the skin without the filament never punctures the skin. There are three modalities of electrolysis used in electrology: galvanic, thermolysis, and blend.

Galvanic, uses galvanized current and the moisture in the skin to create sodium hydroxide (lye) which damages the papilla of the hair. The galvanic method allows for the use of multiple needles.

Thermolysis, which uses only one needle and should not be confused with electrolysis, uses alternating current to create heat which causes damage to the papilla of the hair. The newest method of thermolysis is called SIMPLE. Click here for detailed information about SIMPLE.

Blend combines galvanic and thermolysis modalities. The thermolysis heats up the sodium hydroxide to help damage the papilla of the hair.

With all three modalities, after the needle is removed, the treated hair is extracted. Normally, electrolysis must be done over a period of regular treatments to be effective. Once the regenerative hair cells have been completely removed, there is no way the hair can grow again. The result is permanent hair removal.

Here at Senza Pelo Med Spa, we use all three modalities of electrolysis: galvanic, thermolysis, and blend,

Hair can be removed from any part of the body except inside the ears and nose, and treatments should cause only minor discomfort. An electrologist will ensure a patient’s comfort and safety. Filaments are sterilized when using the multiple needle method and are disposed of when using the single needle blend method.

In our society, there are many advantages to being and feeling attractive. Appearance is an important aspect of communication in both Business and social activities. By adhering to the prescribed series of treatments, you can achieve the hair-free appearance you always dreamed of free from razors or messy irritating chemicals.

Biologist’s tell us that hair on the human body serves as an embellishment and helps improve appearance. However, excessive hair in socially unacceptable areas can cause deeply rooted psychological distress. Hair removal offers significant cosmetic improvement and can be the key to the well-being of a person.

Hair removal can be classified into two main categories; temporary hair removal and permanent hair removal. Temporary hair removal includes those procedures, such as tweezing, waxing, shaving and chemical depilatories. A few stray hairs extending from the eyebrows for instance are not unusual and perfectly normal. However, some women do experience hormone changes which result in excessive unwanted hair. This imbalance may be temporary such as occurs at puberty and menopause, or it may be a more serious, long term problem.

If you have recently noticed a major change in the amount or the pattern of your facial hair and/or body hair, it would be wise to see your physician.

Often, as men mature, they also experience hair growth which they find undesirable, such as thicker eyebrows, increased chest hair, or long dark hairs on the ears. This is not considered abnormal or a symptom of hormone imbalance, but appears to be a natural occurrence resulting from inheritance.

In all cases, unwanted hair can be removed safely, comfortably, and permanently with electrolysis.

Yes! Electrolysis has long been recognized and accepted by the medical profession as an effective and safe method of permanent hair removal. Permanent hair removal can only be accomplished by carefully destroying the hair follicle and those cells that are responsible for hair growth. Therefore, it should be performed only by a well-trained Electrologist in a professional setting. Don’t hesitate to ask your family Physician. Many patients have been referred to Senza Pelo Med Spa by their physicians.

The staff at Senza Pelo Med Spa are highly trained, skilled, and professional Electrologists. An epilator, a modern electronic instrument with a fine filament, is carefully inserted into the hair follicle. The epilator has been designed to recognize the insertion and is programmed to administer a precise amount of current automatically at a programmed length of time. This method is called Low Current Galvanic Epilation. The amount of current is very small, and the average patient describes the treatment as relatively comfortable.

The treatment is administered by a highly trained, professional electrologist using a new multiple filament, micro-processor controlled, low-current galvanic epilator. Scientists and physicians have long recognized the superiority of galvanic current over other methods for hair removal. When combined with the new technology from the electronics industry and a carefully conceived clinical procedure, the Modern Galvanic Method is the most effective, most comfortable, and safest way to achieve permanent hair removal.

Yes. Only those follicles that have actively growing hairs which are visible at the surface of the skin can be treated. At any given point in time, a certain percentage of the follicles are in a resting stage and may have shed their hair. When the resting period is completed, the follicle resumes a natural growth phase, and a new hair appears at the surface of the skin.

Most parts of the body can be treated with the exception of inside the nose and inside the ears. Both men and women have taken advantage of this service and have sound relief from unwanted hair.

That depends on the individual. The amount of hair present and how close the hair growth is must be taken into consideration. Usually a series of treatments is recommended with each session serving to thin out or reduce the density of growth.
