In 1885, Dr. Charles E. Michel, an ophthalmologist in St. Louis, Missouri, developed a technique to remove inverted eyelashes. He used an electric current generated by a battery cell to make permanent hair removal possible. Dr. William Hardaway, a dermatologist and colleague of Dr. Michel, began using the technique on facial hair problems of women. That was the beginning of electrolysis, the only proven and medically recognized method of permanent hair removal.
Waxing, tweezing, shaving, and depilatories may work for a short time, but all are temporary solutions for hair removal.
Electrolysis involves inserting a sterile, fine filament into the natural hair follicle of the skin without the filament never punctures the skin. There are three modalities of electrolysis used in electrology: galvanic, thermolysis, and blend.
Galvanic, uses galvanized current and the moisture in the skin to create sodium hydroxide (lye) which damages the papilla of the hair. The galvanic method allows for the use of multiple needles.
Thermolysis, which uses only one needle and should not be confused with electrolysis, uses alternating current to create heat which causes damage to the papilla of the hair. The newest method of thermolysis is called SIMPLE. Click here for detailed information about SIMPLE.
Blend combines galvanic and thermolysis modalities. The thermolysis heats up the sodium hydroxide to help damage the papilla of the hair.
With all three modalities, after the needle is removed, the treated hair is extracted. Normally, electrolysis must be done over a period of regular treatments to be effective. Once the regenerative hair cells have been completely removed, there is no way the hair can grow again. The result is permanent hair removal.
Here at Senza Pelo Med Spa, we use all three modalities of electrolysis: galvanic, thermolysis, and blend,
Hair can be removed from any part of the body except inside the ears and nose, and treatments should cause only minor discomfort. An electrologist will ensure a patient’s comfort and safety. Filaments are sterilized when using the multiple needle method and are disposed of when using the single needle blend method.
